Javascript Cube

Friday post

1. What did you like about the course?
I liked the diversity of all of the assignments and that we could have our own little spin for each of them.

2. What could be improved?
I did not like the animation assignment nor did I like the minecraft assignment (we do that every year in expos, let's do something else for once). I think that we could've really benefited from a lesson of keyboard shortcuts (at least that's what my dad always says). What can be improved in the classroom is cracking down on the goons that just waste the block by goofing off and/or playing games instead of working.

3. Add a picture from your favourite assignment.

Friday Post

Describe the steps to create an Oval Key Chain using Sketchup.

  1. Choose the "Product Design and Woodworking - Millimeters" template in Sketchup to begin.
  2. In "View", choose "Top" from the "Standard Views" option for the best view to begin your key chain.
  3. With the "Rectangle" tool from the tool bar, you'll draw a rectangle with the dimensions of 100, 40 starting at the origin (where the lines meet). To make the dimensions precise, type the dimensions that you want into the little "Dimensions" box in the lower right corner and press enter.
  4. Once you press enter, you'll notice that the rectangle you've created is quite small; you will have to use the "Zoom Extents" tool from the tool bar to get a better look.
  5. The first thing you want to do to your rectangle is use the "Tape Measure" tool from the tool bar to draw a 5 millimeter border on the top and bottom and 20 millimeters on the sides. To get the precise length of your borders, put the desired length into the "Length" box in the lower right corner.
  6. Now, using the "Arc" tool, draw on the vertical dotted border line from the top of your rectangle to the bottom of your rectangle and bring the centre out to the point where it says "Half Circle". Do this on both sides of your rectangle.
  7. Then, still using the "Arc" tool, draw on the vertical dotted border line from where the two border lines meet up at the top to where they meet up on the bottom. Again, bring the centre out to the point where it says "Half Circle" and repeat on the other side.
  8. Selecting the "Line" tool, connect the two sides by drawing a line directly on the dotted border. Do this on the bottom dotted border as well. Note that once finish the line that you want to keep, the line tool will want to continue the line wherever you move your mouse; to stop it from doing that, once you made the line that you want, hit enter and move on.
  9. Now, grabbing the "Eraser" tool, you'll want to carefully erase the corners of the rectangle and the dotted border lines. To erase the centre section, select the the middle with your "Eraser" tool and hit the right key on your mouse. From there you will see that the middle is highlighted and there is an option to erase in the menu bar that pops up, hit erase and the middle will erase.
  10. Once you've done that, you'll have to grab the "Orbit" tool again and get to an angle where the height of the oval can be easily seen when you change it.
  11. With the "Push/Pull" tool, take the oval, pull it upwards, and, in the "Distance" box in the right hand lower corner, make sure that it's 5 millimetres. You can zoom out a little to see it better if need be.
  12. Going into the "Tools" folder, you'll see the option for "3D Text", selecting that a little box will pop up for you to put your text into. Typing your initials and choosing your font, you'll want to make sure that the length you extrude it for is only 5 milimeters and the height is 30 millimeters before you hit place.
  13. To place your text in the right spot, you'll want to select the "Move" tool and hover over the "Midpoint in Component" area before clicking it and dragging it towards the area where it says "Midpoint" in your oval where you can drop it.
  14. Now you'll want to orbit and zoom in to make sure that the edges of your text connects to the walls of the oval. Most likely they will not but to fix that you'll have to select the text and hit "s" on your keyboard. This will help you resize your text so that it connects to the oval. It is important to do this so that the 3D printer doesn't print the gap.
  15. Finally you're going to just select everything and hit the right button on your mouse, you'll get an option to make it into a group.

Predict your final grade!

WHY do you deserve this grade?

I believe that I deserve this grade because I think that I did fairly well in my work but probably could have done better to get a higher mark. I think that I tried and did my best.
How does this prediction compare to your prediction back in September?
It is lower but still pretty good.
